Job Description

Overview

We're a leading financial institution, a key player in the Maltese market and part of a highly diversified multi-national group of companies. Employing a team of over 270 employees, the bank offers a full range of lending and savings solutions to both personal and business customers. We strive to offer a highly personalised service through our network of thirteen retail branches spread across the Maltese Islands.

‍We are a team of inspired people who believe that opportunities start with a conversation.

‍Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be at the forefront of our digital transformation, responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing AI-driven solutions to enhance operational efficiency. You will focus on building secure, internal AI frameworks—including agentic workflows and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems—to support various banking functions while ensuring the highest standards of data privacy.

You will be responsible for:

  • AI Solution Design: Identifying and analyzing business processes to design end-to-end AI solutions, including the development of agentic workflows and multi-agent orchestrators.
  • Data & Knowledge Engineering: Building and maintaining vector databases to support RAG-based systems, ensuring efficient embedding and retrieval of internal bank data.
  • Security & Compliance: Implementing private AI solutions (such as local LLMs or enterprise-grade private clouds) to ensure sensitive banking information remains secure and compliant with regulatory standards.
  • Model Evaluation: Monitoring the performance of AI models, analyzing output accuracy (preventing hallucinations), and continuously optimizing prompts and workflows for reliability.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with the Data Engineering and Business Solutions teams to integrate AI capabilities into existing banking software and Core Systems.
  • Strategic Research: Staying updated on emerging AI trends (e.g., Llama 3.3, Mistral, Gemini Enterprise) and assessing their potential application within the banking sector.
  • Documentation & Training: Developing standard operating procedures for AI usage and providing training to end-users to ensure the effective and ethical adoption of AI tools.

Competencies and Experience

The potential candidate should be reliable and trustworthy, well-organised with a disposition to learn and have a team-oriented approach. You must possess a strong understanding of how AI can be applied to financial operations while maintaining a rigorous focus on internal control environments. The role requires an analytical mindset capable of troubleshooting complex agentic interactions and the ability to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

You must have:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, AI, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • Technical Expertise: Proven experience with AI frameworks and libraries, specifically relating to Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Vector Databases: Hands-on experience with vector database technologies (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus, or Chroma) and embedding techniques.
  • Programming: Strong proficiency in Python and SQL; experience with API integrations and agent orchestration frameworks is highly desirable.
  • Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with the security considerations of deploying AI in a corporate environment (Private RAG, local hosting). Experience in the financial sector is an asset.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain technical AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
